Who are you? Who do you want to be? What are your strengths as an actor? Your headshots are your opportunity to show managers, casting agents, writers, and directors how you fit into their story. They should be a reflection of your unique look and should showcase your talent. They should be authentic. Above all they should a part of your brand.
Many photographers have a distinct style, and their work is more a reflection of their brand than of yours. My approach is different. I put the focus on you. We start with a consultation. What is your brand? What's your dream role? How do you talk about yourself to producers and directors? How are your agents and managers positioning you in the industry? Show me what you like and don't like. Give me some adjectives. You are your own best art director.
From there, we build a plan. We talk wardrobe and location. We plan lighting and develop a color palette to support the mood and create a subtle emotional impact to reinforce each look. If you're using a stylist, we bring them into the loop. It only works when the whole team understands what we're going for.
Then, and only then, do we shoot.
There are no surprises with me. We check our work together as we go, using an ipad to review images and make sure we're getting the shots we envisioned. If we need to make adjustments, we make them now. It's a little more time consuming, but it's the best way to make sure you get the pictures you need.
The result: Your photos are all about you, not about me.
